Career Network Support

The Career Network Support (CNS) scheme is divided into various stages: Self-Discovery Workshops, the Think Big Challenge (TBC) and a final Dream Sharing Event (DSE).

It is hoped that student-run Youth Empowerment Clubs will follow the CNS cycle, allowing the programmes to continue in the schools.

Self-Discovery Workshops

Self-Discovery Workshops will form the first stage of CNS. These workshops aim to show students how they can take responsibility to push forward their studies and establish clear plans for their future. They also encourage students to engage in extracurricular activities which will serve to prepare them for entry into the crowded labour market and enable them to make well-informed career choices.

Workshops in previous years have covered topics such as identity, careers planning and problem-solving and decision-making. The sessions help students to become more aware of their unique characteristics, behaviour and potential so that they can develop a careers 'road map'.

Think Big Challenge

Students involved in Self-Discovery Workshops may be eager to participate in the Think Big Challenge. This programme encourages students to identify problems within their own school and/or community and work together to generate sustainable solutions. Last year issues such as teen pregnancy, lack of library access and poor academic performance were selected as areas of focus.

The students attend workshops at Ardhi University where they can develop key skills such as time management, creativity, problem-solving and project planning. They also participate in mentoring sessions with Cambridge Development Initiative and Bridge for Change. These experiences equip the students to become radical change-makers in their future careers.
After the workshop series each student team then presents their problem, solution and implementation plan to a panel of judges. In addition, the teams identify potential challenges and outline steps to increase project sustainability. The hope is that the students' initiatives will continue to expand and develop over time to have a real impact on the school community.
The Think Big Challenge doubled in size from 2016-17. It is hoped that the programme will continue to grow in scale over future years.

Dream Sharing Event

The Dream Sharing Event is the largest event in the CNS cycle. It is the culmination of the Think Big Challenge - an awards ceremony as well as a careers fair.

The event will combine presentations by winners and participants of the Big Think Challenge with talks by guest speakers from both public and private sectors. These talks are intended to celebrate, motivate and inspire participants of the challenge and to demonstrate the accessibility of career paths to students through hard-work and study.

The afternoon session is focused around cultivating career knowledge and networking capabilities. Stakeholders from different professions will be present to discuss career options with the students. The networking event is intended to help students understand the steps, actions and qualities required to pursue their dreams and to provide inspiration and practical advice.

Youth Empowerment Clubs

The aim of Youth Empowerment Clubs (YECs) is to support students in further developing the leadership, teamwork and career-planning skills introduced during the Think Big Challenge.

These clubs are intended to empower students to start new initiatives in their schools if they wish, with recourse to the skills they have learnt in the workshops.

After establishing student-led committees, students will independently work through a curriculum designed by CDI and Kite DSM Education which focusses on problem-solving, public speaking, teamwork, and communication skills.

Each month, students participate in various skills-building tasks including creating and pitching a business from a brief, a global trading game, a debate, or a community action project. Students will then have the opportunity to present their projects to teachers and NGO workers. Every six months students have the opportunity to attend a General Meeting, where they can share their knowledge with other schools on the programme at a celebration event.
